Website or mobile app first? How to decide

Founders often ask whether to build an app straight away. In most cases the answer is to start with the web and add an app when usage proves it is needed.

5 min read ·

Start with a website when

You need to be found on Google, explain your offer, or validate demand quickly.

  • People discover you through search or social links
  • You are still learning what customers want
  • You want the fastest and most affordable way to launch

Build a mobile app when

Your users come back often and benefit from being in their pocket.

  • Daily or weekly repeat use (orders, tracking, bookings, learning)
  • You need device features such as notifications or the camera
  • Field teams need a fast, focused tool on the move

The pragmatic path

Launch a fast website that captures enquiries. Share a lightweight web version of the product if you can. When people use it regularly, build the iOS and Android app on the same backend so you are not starting over.

Whichever you choose first, plan the data and backend so the other can plug in later. That is where most rebuilds are avoided.
